  • Who doesn’t love a Mustang

By SD Jones on Saturday, August 10, 2019

I was looking for something sporty that I can use as a daily driver that didn’t have as stiff a ride as my outgoing Subaru WRX. I was drawn to the mustang for several reasons, but one was the current incentives. Once I test drove the car, I just fell in love with it. Awesome classic Mustang styling both on the interior and exterior. I love the 8 inch infotainment screen with the Apple CarPlay and voice activation. I choose a package with with all season Goodyear F1 tires and upgraded rims with black inlay over chrome . Great ride quality. 5 driving modes. Wet,sport, normal, track & drag. I got a great deal on a 19 left over. 5k off sticker. 0% financing for 72 months.
  • That's a lot of PERFORMANCE for only $26,000 bucks

So out of the blue I decided to get a 2019 Mustang 2.3 coupe. I was not even considering a Mustang, but a great deal fell into my lap , and now I'm Pony boy...fun to drive with a lot of curb appeal. I don't want to here how the back seats are cramped,in this segment of cars all back seats have short comings....Besides the awesome performance, I was really surprised how well the fuel economy is in this beast, I avg 22 MPG overall, that's only 2 milles less per gallon then my prevoius car that had only 170 hp vs. the Stang at 310 hp.One more surprise, a huge trunk....PONY BOY OVER AN OUT.
  • Decent Sports Car that Needs a Little More Torque

    4.0
NOTE: The review selection only had the 6-speed manual transmission listed. I owned the one with 6-speed automatic transmission. Also, this is an “enhanced’ review based on submittal questions that were asked from another website. VEHICLE: 2016 2.3L Mustang Eco-boost Premium with 6-speed automatic transmission EXTERIOR COLOR: Guard Metallic INTERIOR COLOR: Dark Saddle Leather Trim Power Seat MILEAGE: 18510 A Decent Sports Car that Needs a Little More Low-end Punch! CONS: Gas Mileage; Handling; Cruise Control; Blind Spots; Build Quality. MODS: Gas hood struts; Upgraded floor mats; Trunk cargo net; Sun shade; Nitrogen conversion for tires. Desired Enhancements: Better rear end grip (wider tires/rear wing; Electric Boost Technology (Borg & Warner E-boosters). RATINGS (based on 5-star system): Comfort: 4 Interior: 3 Performance: 4 Quality: 4 Reliability: 5 Safety: 4 Styling: 5 Technology: 4 Value: 5 The modifications are pretty self-explanatory, therefore I want talk about them except to say I ‘HIGHLY’ recommend vehicles with gas hood/trunk/hatch struts. I also recommend replacing the air in your tires with nitrogen. It provides a more consistent tire pressure over greater temperature changes. I've owned the vehicle for 3-years and enjoyed it very much. It's my second vehicle that I only drive a couple days per week, and on out-of-town trips. My local driving is a combination of rural roads and interstate. I've yet to achieve the rated 32 MPG highway mileage, but I'm still averaging ~24 combined MPG. I expect the MPG to increase as the miles build. A drop of 300-to-500 vehicle pounds would be a welcome improvement. The Guard Metallic color is an attractive color on this vehicle. It’s one of those colors that, depending on sunlight looks green to some, or black or silver to others. I’m always receiving “positive” complements on it. It’s the “first” vehicle I’ve ever been complemented to at a traffic light, parked anywhere, or at a car wash. The dark saddle interior is also a big plus. The performance is good and met most of my expectations. I’ve not personally tested/verified the performance numbers, but there are plenty of automotive review experts (and some amateurs) who have, and I’m satisfied my vehicle is within their test perimeter’s, or at least it feels so too me. It would be proper for this vehicle to at least have the engine in the Fusion Sport to ensure its performance numbers are on par (or above) those of its 4-door stable mate. As mentioned above, I’d plan to add some “enhancement” modifications, but in the case of the B&W update, it’s not to be had! This is one consideration that went in to my “final” decision to trade for a Camaro. This is a very comfortable traveling vehicle for 2-adults and their luggage. If the large trunk does not have enough space, you can drop the rear seatbacks to expand the luggage space. This should provide more than enough luggage capacity for weeks of traveling enjoyment. Although it is a good, comfortable, and excellent handling cruiser, it does have some large rear blind spots. The blind-spot detection and warning systems are an excellent addition. They should be mandatory on all vehicles. Adaptable Cruise Control, which is available but not on my vehicle, works with these safety systems and would be a welcome addition. I place gas mileage in both pros and cons because I’m not currently experiencing the MPG numbers I expected, however, the vehicle is still being broken in. I’ve driven the car on one (2) long range trip (~13-hours for each), and I was able to average 30-MPG. On short range trips (~2-to-3-hours), I’m seeing ~26 MPG, but they include mountainous travel (between Chattanooga, TN and Nashville/Murfreesboro, TN). Another item I listed in Pros and Cons is handling. On dry pavement and in warm weather, this vehicle handles excellently. However, if it rains or the temperatures are cool/cold (below 50-degrees), the rear end gets loose! The tire tread is in great shape (close to new tire depth). I’ve talked to other Mustang owners of this generation body style, and they indicate they have the same issue. Some of them said putting larger tires on the rear would help mitigate the problem, however I was not keen on buying new tires. Further research indicated turning off traction control and placing the vehicle in Rain/Snow Mode could also mitigate the problem. I tried this solution and it worked well enough for me. I listed build quality as a complaint because the vehicle does not seem to be put together as well as some of its competitors, say the Chevrolet Camaro. A couple of straight forward examples are: 1) the lack of gas struts for the hood, and 2) the non-finished trunk struts. The Camaro has both of these, but that’s for another discussion. I traded this vehicle for a Camaro SS in August 2019. This was mostly about completing one of my bucket list items (to own a version of each Pony Car), but it was also to experience that one last V8 driving exhilaration before the gas prices begin to rise and I switch to a hybrid or EV vehicle (there’s nothing like the instant torque that you get in these vehicles). While I love these ‘Muscle Cars’, I’m cognizant of the damage they do to the environment. Sometimes ‘CHANGE’ is good! RATINGS (based on 5-star system): Comfort: 4 Interior: 3 Performance: 4 Reliability: 5 Safety: 4 Technology: 4 Value: 5 As far as my ratings go, I rated value and reliability as my only 5s. The 4-cylinder turbo model is a bargain when compared to other vehicles in its class, and when you consider other variates that cost a lot more, its performance/value equation is higher, and that’s when you’re not “tracking” the vehicle. I’ve had “NO” reliability issues with the vehicle. 4s were given in comfort, performance, safety and technology. As mentioned elsewhere in this review, the vehicle is an excellent road vehicle. While getting in/out and rear seating is a challenge, it’s no more difficult than with any other sports car. Its performance is more than adequate for today’s roads. Road conditions and congestion mitigate exploring a lot of the vehicle’ performance, but there’s always track days (NOTE: I never used this vehicle on a race track). The vehicle contains more than adequate technology, but I still pined for distance-following cruise control, automatic emergency braking and magnetic-type ride control. I’ve rented vehicles that have this type of cruise control and automatic braking, and I’ve found it very useful when driving in heavy traffic in unfamiliar locations. Although I’ve no prior experience with magnetic ride suspensions, I did obtain the Camaro with it and find it a “big” plus, especially on bad roads. I highly recommend these safety and comfort/performance systems. Lastly, I rated the interior as a 3 because its rear seats are basically unusable, there are some fit and finish issues, and because of a nagging shaking rear view mirror issue. The rear seat issue is applicable to most, if not all, sports cars, but the fit/finish and mirror issues are not. There are plenty of storage areas and the glove compartment and center console areas are more than adequate, especially when compared to the Camaro. However, there were a few mismatch colors and seems that distracted from an otherwise good looking interior. The rear view mirror shake is a big part of the fit/finish issues as the Ford dealership was never able to resolve it to my satisfaction. All I can say is that the Camaro’s mirror does not shake, even over some rough pavement! All things being considered, I was very pleased with this vehicle and give it a thumbs-up recommendation!
